FAITH CLASS : PRAYING IN TONGUE
PRAYING IN TONGUE
The Apostle Paul wrote and spoke much about the subject of speaking in tongues.” And he apparently practiced what he preached. He said, “ I thank my God I speak with tongues more than ye all” — I Corinthians 14:18. The purpose of this particular article is to set forth fifteen reasons why every Christian should speak in tongues and to help believers see the blessings in speaking in tongues and an understanding of it will greatly enhance your Christian walk with God. So, this writeup gives you what you need to know about praying in tongue.
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance – Acts 2:1-4(NKJV).
WHAT IS AN UNKNOWN TONGUE?
Unknown tongue is the language of the Holy Spirit spoken by man, who has no understanding of what he is speaking. This is also known as speaking in an unknown tongue, and a mystery from the Almighty Father. This empowers a believer to serve the Lord and do exploits in His kingdom. And Christ told His disciples not to leave Jerusalem until they’re endured with this power. So, after the baptism, Peter, who couldn’t face a maid, stood before a multitude and openly identified with Christ. And he boldly preached Christ and salvation to them, leading many to Christ (Acts 2:1-41).
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PRAYING IN TONGUES
1. IT’S A GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Speaking in tongues is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. And is given to every believer, who opens up to receive it.
To another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues – 1 Corinthians 12:10 (NKJV).
2. YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND IT
It’s a language you speak but you lack understanding of what you’re saying, except where you can interpret too.
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful – I Corinthians 14:14 (NKJV).
3. IT’S ANOTHER MAN’D LANGUAGE
Though you don’t understand what you’re saying, another person whose language it is can understand what you’re saying.
And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?… Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God – Acts 2:8, 11 (NKJV).
4. IT’S A SIGN THAT FOLLOWS BELIEVERS
Speaking in tongues is also one of the signs that follow believers in Christ. As such it’s exclusive to born-again Christians, otherwise, it’s not the real tongue from God.
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues – Mark 16:17 (NKJV).
5. SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS A PRAYER LANGUAGE AND BUILDS YOUR FAITH
When you’re speaking in tongues, you’re talking to God. But this time you’re praying in the language of the Holy Spirit. This is why speaking in tongues is also called praying in the Spirit. Also worthy of note is that when you’re praying in the Spirit you’re building up your faith in God.
But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit – Jude 1:20 (NKJV).
6. THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH YOU
Though you’re the one making the utterances, yet it’s the Holy Spirit who is speaking through you. So, the Holy Spirit makes intercession for you according to the will of God, praying what you ought to pray. This enables you to pray exactly what you need to pry at that time.
Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God – Romans 8:26-27 (NKJV).
7. IT’S A MYSTERY
Speaking in tongues is beyond human comprehension. This is because when you pray in tongues, your spirit prays, but you don’t know what you’re saying. Yet, you’re communicating perfectly well with God. And it’s a channel through which God empowers believers to do exploits.
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful – I Corinthians 14:14 (NKJV).
Listen carefully: I am sending the Promise of My Father [the Holy Spirit] upon you; but you are to remain in the city [of Jerusalem] until you are clothed (fully equipped) with power from on high. – Luke 24:49 AMP
8. YOU GIVE THANKS WELL SPEAKING IN TONGUES
The Holy Spirit speaks directly to God when you’re speaking in tongues. So, He says the perfect things to Him, since He is His Spirit and knows Him more than any other.
For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified – I Corinthians 14:17 (NKJV)
For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God – I Corinthians 2:11 (NKJV).
9. SPEAKING IN TONGUES WITH LOVE IN YOUR HEART IS VERY IMPORTANT
Praying in the spirit is essential to a believer. However, walking in love towards God and man is more important than it. Hence, speaking in tongues without having love only makes you a sounding instrument.
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal – I Corinthians 13:1 (NKJV).
10. SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS AN INITIAL EVIDENCE, OR SIGN, OF THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
The Word of God teaches that when we are filled with the Holy Ghost, we speak with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives utterance. Speaking in tongues is an initial evidence, or sign, of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
“And they were filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance” — Acts 2:4.
11. PRAYING IN TONGUES IS A MEANS OF SPIRITUAL EDIFICATION AND BUILDING UP.
Paul encouraged the Corinthian Christians to continue the practice of speaking with other tongues in their worship of God. He also encouraged them to speaking tongues in their individual prayer life as a means of spiritual edification and building up.
, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself” — I Corinthians 14:14.
“For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays.”
The Amplified Bible reads, “My spirit, by the Holy Spirit within me, prays.”
God is Spirit. When you pray in tongues, your spirit is in direct contact with God, Who is Spirit. When you speak in tongues, you are talking to Him by divine supernatural means.
12. SPEAKING IN TONGUES ELIMINATES THE POSSIBILITY OF SELFISHNESS ENTERING YOUR PRAYER LIFE.
For instance, if I pray a prayer out of my own mind and thinking, it may be unscriptural and it may be selfish. Paul wrote to the Church at Rome, “We know not what we should pray for as we ought” — Romans 8:26. He didn’t say we didn’t know how to pray. We are instructed to pray to the Father in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ (John 16:23-24). However, just because I know how to pray doesn’t mean that I know what to pray for as I ought. So Paul said, “We know not what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself (Himself) market intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” — Romans 8:26. The Holy Ghost is not going to do our praying for us. He is sent to help us pray. Speaking with other tongues is praying as the Spirit gives utterance. It is Spirit-directed praying, and it eliminates the possibility of selfishness in our prayers.
13. IT HELPS BELIEVERS LEARN TO TRUST GOD.
The Bible says, “Building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost” —Jude 20. Speaking in tongues stimulates faith and helps us learn how to trust God more fully. For example, faith must be exercised to speak with tongues because the Holy Spirit specifically directs the words we speak. We don’t know what the next word will be. We have to trust God for that. Trusting God in one area helps us to learn to trust Him in other areas.
14. IT PROVIDES A WAY FOR YOU TO PRAY ABOUT THINGS YOU ARE NOT THINKING OF OR THINGS YOU AREN’T’ EVEN AWARE OF.
We already know that the Holy Spirit helps us pray for particular situations when we don’t know how to pray about them. In addition, the Holy Spirit, who knows everything, everywhere, can pray for us for things about which our natural mind knows nothing.
15. PRAYING IN TONGUES IS A WEAPON AGAINST THE WORK OF THE ENEMY
“And then he told them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved.… These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages.… They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.’” –Mark 16:15-18
Jesus proclaimed several things that would happen to those who followed Him and continued His work. Speaking in tongues is one of those gifts, and it allows Jesus’ followers to stand against the work of the enemy.
James 3:8 says, “But the tongue can no man tame, it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” Yielding your tongue to the Holy Spirit to speak with other tongues is a big step toward being able to fully yield all your members to God. If you can yield your tongue, you can yield any member of your body to God. Speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of the infilling of the Holy Spirit. God has given us this wonderful spiritual gift to bless us, edify us, and refresh us throughout our lives on this earth. Let’s remember what God has provided and enjoy the benefits of speaking in tongues.
